Thinkpad R61 NVS Quadro 140M. Hot summer and garbled display

Problem started recently, about one week before. Sometimes I get garbled screen and notebook freezes. I thought it was connection to the display. I had such problem in the past with other notebook, but it was note the case here. Then I realized that it was overheating. I set my processor speed to Low, because in Adaptive it overheats too. Temperature of GPU dropped from 90 to 60. Works OK, but it’s slow as hell!

So I have defective GPU in my notebook.

My notebook is out of warranty. Looking for ways to prevent it from dying and it seems like it’s imminent.

OpenType and Windows XP

It’s fun and easy to get to know something about someone. Here are just random observations.

You can say what phone or camera someone have just by looking at file name and searching for it on the web. DSC_01234, SP_01234 etc. Also you can search for this information in image’s meta information.

OpenID – hack once, login everywhere.

Most people use one login name across all websites. This makes them easy target for background information search. Just google it.

Example: we have someone with aabbcc@mail.com. You can try to search for “aabbcc@mail.com”, or “aabbcc”. Also, if there is numbers in username like aabbcc1, you can try to remove them and search for just aabbcc. It’s very fun to find out how someone that you met online is lying to you about his/her age, name, homeplace etc.

Some social network website have privacy settings that can help you to make your profile private so people that you don’t know can’t see it. But sometimes there is one mistake made in platform design.

Example: we have link to photos on our profile page. If you make your profile private others can’t see this link, right? Not always. Especially, if there is additional privacy settings for photos. Your profile homepage: socialnetwork.com/aabbcc_profile. Here is link to photos somewhere: socialnetwork.com/aabbcc_profile/photos. You hide your homepage, but those who know link can still use it to see your photos. Just go to socialnetwork.com/aabbcc_profile/photos. Same applyies to other parts of your profile. Think of your friends, public messages etc.

Yours security and privacy is security and privacy of those who you love, your friends and family.

P.S. Security and privacy is always compromise between comfort and easiness of usage. Educate yourself! It’s very sad how many people are easy targets of this security and privacy mistakes.

Lenovo Thinkpad R61 with NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M and Mac OS X (osx86)

Thinkpad R61 is great PC, but with Mac OS X it can be perfect.

I did research on this topic and here are results for those, who are interested.

As of now it’s possible to get it working with Mac OS X, but no Quartz Extreme and Core Images support because MacOS can’t recognize NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M. Actually, if you have graphic card with shared memory you are in trouble, cause there seems to be no solution to get it working.

Update: For Dell users: I read that NVS140M works great in some dell notebook, so you have a chance. Thought name of graphic card can be the same you have to remember that inside they are different, so still no working solution for Thinkpad’s.

If you have Thinkpad with Intel graphic – you have great opportunity to try MacOS.

Virtual Mac OS

MacOS X 10.5.5 in VMware works ok, but again – no QE/CI. Networking is ok. It’s easily possible to use it for things as writing, editing docs with applications that have no Windows version (for example, OmniOutliner). Even for browsing web (though, a bit slow rendering of pages) and chat. Also, it’s great to see what is Mac OS at all, but with QE/CI you get full impression of OS greatness.

MacOS were much more stable with VMware player 2.5 (it was recently updated to 2.5.1 ). Now it freezes often without any reason.
